How to Reduce Slippage When Trading Crypto

Every technique here works by the same mechanism: making your order small relative to available depth, or refusing prices you have not agreed to.

Step 1 — Look at the book before you size the order

The routine that prevents most slippage, and it takes about ten seconds.

  1. Decide your maximum acceptable slippage — say 0.5%.
  2. Read the cumulative depth within 0.5% of the midpoint on the side you will hit.
  3. That quantity is your maximum market order.

If you want to buy 10,000 tokens and only 3,000 rest within 0.5%, your order is too large for this market at this moment. That is information you have before trading, not after.

Step 2 — Default to limit orders on thin pairs

A limit order specifies the worst price you will accept and refuses to execute beyond it. This eliminates negative slippage by construction.

The trade-off: it may not fill, or may fill only partially, leaving a smaller position than intended.

On an illiquid pair the asymmetry is stark: the downside of a limit order is not trading, while the downside of a market order is unbounded. Not trading is almost always the cheaper failure.

Step 3 — Price limit orders sensibly

A limit order priced far from the market is a wish. A limit order priced at the current best price often behaves nearly like a market order.

Practical approach:

  • To buy, place slightly above the best bid rather than at the best ask. You join the bid queue and may be filled by a seller crossing to you — earning the spread instead of paying it.
  • Accept that this takes time. You are trading immediacy for price, which is the entire point.
  • If you must have the fill, price it to cross but set the limit at your true maximum, not at the current ask. It then behaves as a market order with a hard ceiling.

That last technique is underused: a marketable limit order gives you immediacy and a bound on the damage.

Step 4 — Split large orders

If your order exceeds available depth, execute it in pieces and let the book replenish between them.

  • Divide into portions that each sit within your depth budget.
  • Space them enough for resting orders to be replaced — this varies by pair, from seconds to hours.
  • Watch whether the book is actually replenishing. If it is not, you are simply walking down the book more slowly.

The cost: the market can move against you during execution. Splitting converts a certain, immediate cost into an uncertain, spread-out one. On a thin book that is usually a good trade; in a fast-moving market it may not be.

Step 5 — Choose your moment

Depth is thinnest exactly when trading feels most urgent:

  • During sharp moves, market makers widen or withdraw.
  • Around scheduled news, participants step back.
  • In thin hours for the pair's dominant population.
  • In the first minutes of a new listing, before the book has formed.

If your trade is not time-sensitive, executing during calm conditions on a normal-depth book is frequently worth more than any other technique on this page.

Step 6 — Set slippage tolerance deliberately

Where an interface offers a maximum slippage setting, it cancels orders that would exceed it.

  • Too tight — orders fail repeatedly in normal conditions, and each retry costs time during which the price moves.
  • Too loose — the setting stops protecting you. A 50% tolerance is not a safeguard, it is a formality.

Derive the value from the pair's actual depth rather than accepting a default. A pair where 1% is routine needs a different setting from one that trades at 0.05%.

Step 7 — Prefer the deeper pair

Where a token trades against more than one quote asset, the deeper book usually produces a better all-in result even after converting.

Compare properly: effective cost on pair A versus effective cost on pair B plus the conversion cost. A 3% slippage saving easily justifies a 0.1% conversion.

  • Splitting an order on a book that is not replenishing — this just extends the same walk down the book.
  • Chasing a fill by repeatedly repricing a limit order upward until it becomes a market order with extra steps.
  • Ignoring the exit. Entering a position on a thin book means exiting on one too.
